HAPPY NEW YEAR!

How many times have we said that, without giving any thought
to how it all began!

For instance, did you know that New Years Day was not always
January the 1st?

Ancient celebrations were held around 4000 years ago in Babylon,
on the day we now have as March 23rd.

Since then many odd superstions have evolved, and we have
adopted some of them as part of our New Year celebrations.

NEW YEAR IS A TIME OF BEGINNING!

Raise your glass to toast in the new year as you read on!

Born on January 1:
Babies born on this day are considered lucky!

Letting the Old Year Out: Open all doors to let the old year depart.

Money: It is also considered bad luck to pay back or lend money.

New Clothes: Wear something new on January 1st - for luck.

Kissing at midnight: We kiss at midnight - wishing all well.

Loud Noise: Make as much noise as possible at midnight,
to scare away evil spirits.

Stocking Up: To ensure a full larder for the new year.

First Footing: After the stroke of midnight, a selected
friend or relative will enter your home, and bring
good luck.
He must be dark and have a small token of luck
for the household.

No one should leave before the First Footer arrives.

HERE IS A "WEIRD ONE!

The Weather: Check the weather in the early hours of
New Year's Day.

If the wind blows from the south, there will be Prosperity.

If it comes from the north, it will be a year of bad weather.

Wind blowing from the east brings famine and calamities.

Wind blowing from the west, it will be a time of plenty.

If there's no wind at all, a joyful and prosperous year
may be expected by all.
